Disability Equality Training (DET)

This course will enable participants to identify and address discriminatory forms of practice towards disabled people. Through training they will find ways to challenge the organisational behaviour which reinforces negative myths and values and which prevents disabled people from gaining equality and achieving full participation in society.

Design and delivery is underpinned by the Social Model of Disability giving optimum understanding of barriers to social inclusion.

Learning outcomes:

  • To have a sound understanding of how the Social Model of Disability is a tool for empowering disabled people.
  • To understand the Disability Discrimination Act and current disability legislation including the Equality Act 2010.
  • To attain an understanding of diversity and how it underpins good practice in the workplace.
  • To be able to identify how organisational policies and procedures create an accessible environment, effective recruitment and sustainable employment for disabled people.
  • To understand how myths and misconceptions relating to disability reinforces prejudice and barriers to social inclusion.
  • To gain confidence to support clients or colleagues who may be experiencing discriminatory practice.
  • To be able to identify the empowerment of appropriate and inclusive language and behaviour.
  • To be able to apply the principles learned throughout the course to develop good working practice.

  • A Summary of Key concepts and proposals within the Equality Act 2010.
  • Copy of 'Disability, Health & Employment' a short guide for SMEs - from the Disability Rights Commission (DRC).
  • Disability Equality Crossword examining themes covered during day.
  • Online evaluation.
  • A certificate of course completion.
